Melawit Solomon, Team Editor

Melawit Solomon, also known as Mel, is a freshman in her first year of journalism. The class first appealed to her because of the diversity in its coverage and lack of biased writers. Not only is Solomon fluent in English, but also in Tigrinya, which is her parents’ native language. She can also understand its neighboring language, Amharic. Solomon wishes to attend Columbia University and major in political science. She hopes to have a future in law, specifically as a defense or immigration attorney. In her free time she enjoys reading, her favorite genre being mystery novels. Solomon's favorite quote is “ What is life if we have no courage to do anything?” by Vincent Van Gough, a famous painter. She likes it because it has motivated her to embark on adventures out of her comfort zone which included taking journalism. She has been at UPA since seventh grade, and while in journalism, she hopes to spread more messages about climate change and how corrupt America's government is while inspiring others to do the same. She finds those two topics the most important because they do not get enough media attention. With the right people, she hopes to make an impact in the news coverage of Aquila this year.
