Sophomore Shelby Byrd is in her second year of journalism. Some of Byrd’s favorite hobbies are cheer, basketball, track and field and cross country. She especially enjoys cheer because she was inspired by her cousins and felt able to embrace her girlhood. Participating in many sports appears to be a tradition in the Byrd household, with many of her family members participating in sports as well. In the future, Byrd wants to explore becoming a lawyer, doctor or therapist due to her desire to help others. She attributes this virtue to her family, who inspires her to care for those around her. One piece of advice she takes to heart is to put herself first, as she believes the only way to help others is to first work on yourself. In journalism this year, she aspires to grow her skillset as a writer and to expand her usual writing types to more diverse topics.
