Karen Heng, Reporter

Junior Karen “Kraken” Heng is currently a first year journalism student. Heng’s carpool friends created the nickname “Kraken,” because of a silly game of creating a nickname for every person in the carpool. Being around people that value and want her to grow as a person is important to Heng because she finds it nice to be around those that care about her. She values selflessness in the people she surrounds herself with because she can always count on them for help with no strings attached. When faced with a setback, Heng resonates with the quote “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but never defeated” by Ernest Hemmingway because it represents determination and willpower. The best advice that she received in a podcast she listened to was “if you wanted something to turn out as you hoped but it didn’t, it wasn’t meant to happen” because it tells her that there will be more opportunities in the future to redesign and try again. Heng hopes to bring light to the way the media affects minorities, people of color and marginalized groups and how the film industry portrays and furthers stereotypes, causing more harm than good. She wants to cover topics on student past experiences in life and film reviews on the Aquila broadcast channel. Heng spends her free time watching movies from different eras, drawing and listening to music.
